Just once I'd like to live in an apartment building where the people above
me are at least halfway considerate. I've written about these people before,
but I'm doing it again because I'm not pleased.

I had a hard time getting to sleep last night. Putting myself flat in bed
made breathing difficult for some reason, so after trying for about an hour
I moved out to my couch where I finally fell asleep around midnight.

5:00 AM comes and I start to hear thumping and stomping from upstairs. I've
got this family's routine down, and this is definitely not the normal
routine, especially when she started running her washer at 5:30. By 6:00 AM,
the kids were running around screaming and making all kinds of noise, and
she wasn't even making any sort of attempt to quiet them down. Normally,
when she attempts it, I can hear her since she yells at them at top volume.
This lady seriously has no control over her kids. Calling management does
absolutely no good because, although they attempt to do something about it,
nothing changes. She's home during the day, and there's absolutely no reason
why she has to throw her laundry in at 5:30. I'm waiting for my very large
living room window to crack due to all the thumping. It's been doing a lot
of rattling already, and I can't imagine that it's going to hold forever. Is
that what it's going to take to get somewhere with these people? I would
love, more than anything else, to get a house where I wouldn't have to deal
with this kind of stuff. But considering that that's not going to happen,
how about a little bit of consideration and common sense instead? Sadly, I
suspect I'm asking too much.

Solution to neighbor problem

Have a fan running in your room to drown out the sound. It doesn't have to be blowing on you. Either that or some other constant noise maker. Perhaps a radio tuned between stations and turned up to emit lovely "white noise." What do you think? I'm Sarah Z's dad. heesendr@beloit.edu

Actually, I do sleep with a book on so I've got noise going, but these people are all over the apartment and it makes the windows rattle and the walls shake, plus it scares the cats so unfortunately a fan wouldn't help in this situation. I suppose part of it is the joys of low-income housing. SMILE!!!! Thanks for the suggestion though, it's definitely appreciated.

I had horrible neighbors for the first several years I lived in my house. I won't go into the details, but it was awful. Finally, I decided to start praying (sending good thoughts? LOL) that the family would find a wonderful new home that would be everything they wanted and much better than the house they were in (which was a dump). Well, I can't say exactly what happened, but about a year later, they announced they were moving to a better place--and, yes indeed, they moved away!

I'm not excusing the washer at 5:30 in the morning, but it could very well be that one of the kiddos got sick in their bed, and that's not exactly something one would leave sitting until a decent hour of the morning. Yuck. I do sympathize though; apartment living sucks.

I could see that if it were a one-time thing, but this lady runs the machines at all hours of the night and day. Accidents can happen, but I strongly suspect that she was awake, and since she was awake she figured she'd start her daily tasks, never mind what time it was.

Ugh that doesn't sound like fun that early in the morning... I can sleep through all that *grin*. I hate when management are unwilling to straightening things out.

The next apartment you live in, make it a top floor. I never have that problem. Most I have to worry about is the occasional noise below me, and that's ignoreable.
